Pink, purple, blue, coral and deep red varieties suit a wide range of interiors. Classic hydrangeas often feature subtle, changing colour tones that feel especially appropriate in late summer and early autumn.

Style a bouquet without filler greenery

Choose a stable vase that can support the weight of the flower heads. Cut the stems at slightly different heights to avoid a rigid, level outline.

Three to five large hydrangeas may be enough for a complete arrangement. Natural hydrangea leaves can remain above the waterline, but eucalyptus and other filler foliage are unnecessary.

Care for hydrangeas in a vase

Hydrangeas need plenty of water. Start with a thoroughly cleaned vase and a generous amount of fresh water. Trim several centimetres from the firm stems at an angle using a clean, sharp knife or suitable secateurs.

Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline and check the water level daily. Keep the flowers away from direct sunlight, radiators, draughts and ripening fruit. Lightly misting a bloom may help when it begins to lose firmness.
